My dissertation project, “Three Essays on Resistance to Democratic Backsliding,” examines the domestic and international factors that shape public support for and the success of opposition movements in challenging and reversing incumbent-led democratic backsliding using survey experiments, quantitative text analysis, and in-depth interviews with elites.
The first paper focuses on the importance of domestic-level factors while papers two and three turn to the international arena and argue that different forms of international pressure are consequential for the success of and support for oppositions.
My dissertation has been generously funded by MSU’s College of Social Science, the Institute for Liberty and Responsibility, and the Institute for Humane Studies. If you would like more information please feel free to reach out to me via email!
